The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board is throwing its full support behind a provincial “Toonies for Tuition” campaign to ensure that Catholic students in other Canadian provinces can attend Catholic schools.
Established by the Canadian Catholic School Trustees’ Association (CCSTA), “Toonies for Tuition” provides financial aid to Catholic schools across Canada in need of funding.
Unlike Ontario, which enjoys the privilege of a thriving, publicly funded Catholic school system, in over half of Canadian provinces, parents must pay the full cost for their children to attend a Catholic school.
“Toonies for Tuition” is being championed by the Secondary Student Council Presidents who, says Assistant Superintendent Julie Angiolillo, “are fully committed to ensuring a successful campaign in order to support Catholic education for their fellow students in neighbouring provinces.”
The campaign will run from November 2, 2020 until April 9, 2021.
In secondary schools, the student council presidents will be collaborating with their school administration in order to have civvies days to support this important campaign.
And as the name suggests, support can be as simple as a toonie donation.
This year, donations can be made online via School Cash Online. To donate, please click and under “Fund Destination” please select “Toonies for Tuition.”
Monies raised will be sent to the Ontario Campaign to support “Toonies for Tuition.”
Stressing the importance of the initiative, Chairperson Patrick Daly applauded the student presidents “for their commitment to assist students who are not as fortunate as those in Ontario.”
“I urge all trustees, staff, parents, students and parish communities to support this worthy cause to whatever extent possible.”
